The Land of Golden Milk and Honey

Lately I have been trying to incorporate turmeric into as many meals as possible. It is well known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and gut healing properties. Some people have a hard time adjusting to the taste and are looking for a more soothing option, enter Golden Milk! Golden milk, or turmeric milk, has been used in India for years to treat a variety of diseases and for daily health. What are some of the benefits?

Building Immunity: Around this time of year it seems there is a never ending “bug” that travels from house to house. Turmeric has great anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties that fight the infection and soothe inflammation for recovery.

Gut Health: Turmeric helps build up the good bacteria (flora) in our digestive tract. This will improve digestion, reduce bloating and gas, and reduce the inflammation associated with IBS and Crohn’s disease.

Depression: Turmeric can keep our hormones balanced and has been shown to have a greater effect on our moods than depression medications (without the side effects), making it the perfect remedy for the Winter Blues.

Blood Purifier: We are constantly being exposed to different toxins by our food, drink, the air we breathe, etc. Being a detoxifying agent, turmeric can remove impurities from our blood and support liver function to flush toxins from our body!

Arthritis: Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties can reduce the pain, swelling and inflammation associated with arthritis. It can also build up bone health and increase flexibility.

Enhances Sleep: Drinking warm milk an hour before bed helps our body to decompress from a long day. Turmeric reduces stress and can relax your body allowing for a deep sleep and calm mind.

To make Golden Milk you need to first make turmeric paste:

  • 1/2 Cup turmeric powder ( I use Healthworks brand off Amazon)
  • 1 Cup filtered water
  • 1.5 Tsp black pepper ( This allows you to absorb the healing properties)
  • 5 Tbs coconut oil

Mix water and turmeric powder in a pan over low heat until a paste forms (add more water slowly if too thick). Add black pepper and coconut oil and stir to combine. Let cool to room temperature and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Now you are ready to make Golden Milk!

Recipe:

  • 2 cups almond milk (or any other plant based milk you may like)
  • 1/2 Tsp turmeric paste
  • 1/4 Tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 Tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 Tsp coconut oil
  • 2 Tsp honey or maple syrup

Whisk all ingredients in a small sauce pan and heat over medium- low heat until heated through, do not allow to boil.
